Lake Tekapo
In the heart of the Mackenzie Country, in the centre of the South Island, New Zealand lies Lake Tekapo. It is only 3 hour drive away from Christchurch International airport. The name Tekapo derives from Maori words Taka (sleeping mat) and Po (night). With its stunning turquoise lake and striking surrounding peaks, is sure to take your breath away at any time of year.
Set at 710 meters high, this highland lake is surrounded by a vast basin of golden tussock grass. Summer or winter, snow-covered or golden yellow, the surrounding mountains and turquoise lake make a spectacular backdrop for the Church of the Good Shepherd. Popular in summer for waterskiing, swimming, fishing and walking, Lake Tekapo is making a name for itself as a winter destination with hot pools, ice skating and skiing all on offer.
