Coconut Lagoon

The only way to reach Coconut Lagoon is by boat. It sounds like a bit of an adventure and it is – but a very worthwhile one, because you get a glimpse of Kerala‘s fabulous wildlife and rich tropical vegetation along the way. On reaching Coconut Lagoon, you quickly realize why the resort was thus named. Situated in an abandoned coconut plantation, it lives up to all the glorious resonances of its title.

Accommodation on the resort comes in the shape of traditional Keralan wooden houses known as tharawads. Some are traditionally built, others more modern, but all have been constructed to the highest standards by skilled local craftsmen. The oldest of the residences dates back to the early 1700s, whereas several others are one hundred years old or more. The history of the villas aside, all the residences guarantee a luxurious and thoughtfully designed experience. The grounds are also wonderfully natural. A cow, as opposed to a lawnmower, keeps the grass in check, and butterflies and birds dart freely around the gardens.

Many come to Coconut Lagoon for the ayurvedic treatments, which include physiotherapy, yoga, and a host of alternative therapies, although if you are feeling more active, a wealth of water sports is available, including speedboating, canoeing, and fishing. If you were taken by the scenery on the way in, why not take an hour-long sunset cruise, or rent the resort’s traditional wood and straw houseboat? Then you can see the mangroves, coconut trees, and paddy fields up close and personal. Location: Kerala, India.
