Matai Falls in the Catlins New Zealand is a beautiful waterfall surrounded by green foliage and moss in a forest. Matai Falls along the Southern Scenic Route, Catlin’s Highway, Catlins, Southland, East Coast, South Island, New Zealand. This waterfall is also one of the more popular waterfalls, along with McLean Falls and Purakaunui Falls in the Catlins.You’ve got the choice of seeing two waterfalls when you do the Matai Falls walk: Matai Falls and Horseshoe Falls.

The Matai falls are easily reached on a fifteen minute walk from the carpark on the south side of Table Hill and the hike is on the easier scale which makes it ideal for people of all ages. Through regenerating podocarp / broadleaf forest, beautiful Matai Falls are best viewed late in the morning.  

Surrounded by bush, this magnificent waterfall cascades 20 metres over three distinct tiers. A 20 minute bush and beach walk will lead you to Cathedral Caves, accessible only at low tide. Rising more than 30 metres in places, the caves resonate with the sound of the sea.
