Home House Club

househomeclub

It is the funkiest, most space-age bar in London. Years ago it was a private house at Number 20 Portman Square for the Countess of Home by the 18th-century genius Robert Adam. When the club took over the equally august house next door, they commissioned Zaha Hadid to design the new bar and lounge (along with a reception desk). For an architect who often struggles to have her ambitious projects realized, this was a chance to complete a perfect miniature within an ideal space — a 250-year-old backdrop created in an era when the grammar of architectural form was just being written.

Mama Shelter Hotel

mama shelter hotel

This designed hotel is called Mama Shelter, where the rooms start at 79 euros, and is the latest favorite address for usually spendthrift editors having to watch their expenses. During the couture show in January, it was  no-vacancy hot spot, and for this month only the 299 euro rooms are still available. But Mama Shelter isn’t exactly an exercise in deprivation: every room comes with its own iMac, free WiFi and, of course, all the gold leaf and Lucite you’d expect from Starck.

Uxua Casa Hotel

uxua casa hotel

Uxua Casa Hotel is a compound of nine renovated houses, two restaurants and a spa opened by Wilbert Das, the creative director of Diesel, in the Brazilian fishing village of Trancoso. Uxua is not being billed as any kind of extension of the Diesel lifestyle, and it’s clearly not Italy-comes-to-Brazil. It’s not even Brazil-goes-global — the houses, some dating to the 1500s, were redone by local builders using traditional construction techniques and recycled materials.

Ace Hotel Palm Springs

ace hotel palm spring

The new Ace Hotel is already shaping up to be Southern California’s boho playground du jour. The hotel has 180 rooms with denim headboards and things like vintage furniture and retro turntables with “The Red-Headed Stranger” on vinyl. At the bar, you’re greeted by Charlie, who handmake his excellent fizzy blackberry soda and Black Sheep Ale. The hotel’s restaurant, King’s Highway, used to be a Denny’s — and in some ways, it still is, but with vegetarian tamales for brunch. (Get there before noon or they’ll probably be sold out).

Gay Tourism in Italy

villa cappelli

These days there are many resorts aim at gay and lesbian travelers. That is why the new Villa Cappelli, off the ancient Roman road, Via Appia, in the southern Italian region of Puglia, is such a welcome surprise. Paul Cappelli, the founder of the Manhattan advertising agency The Ad Store, puchased the property in his grandmother’s hometown, Terlizzi, in 2003, and set to work transforming the 14th-century villa and surrounding terra-cotta-roofed farmhouses into a luxurious retreat.

The Missoni Hotel, Edinburgh

Recently Edinburgh have boasted its image from a staid academic town to a cultural hot spot with lively festivals, robust nightlife and, yes, even fashion. The Best Dinner Theater in Copenhagen

dinner theatre copenhagen

Madeleines Madteater is a kind of interactive dinner performance staged every few months in the neighborhood of Islands Brygge, Copenhagen. There were lyrical strings and a dramatic areas of light and a dancer undulating on the serving dais, and it was all ritual. That is the point. It’s art you experience with all five senses, the most satisfying performance in town. Madteater is precisely as its name translates: food theater. The project, is a collaboration between the chef Mette Sia Martinussen and the film production designer Nikolaj Danielsen, along with a board of directors that includes an anthropologist, a psychotherapist, a couple of artists and a neurology professor conducting research into the senses. But this is no gimmick; it’s still very much about the food.
