Home House Club

It is the funkiest, most space-age bar in London. Years ago it was a private house at Number 20 Portman Square for the Countess of Home by the 18th-century genius Robert Adam. When the club took over the equally august house next door, they commissioned Zaha Hadid to design the new bar and lounge (along with a reception desk). For an architect who often struggles to have her ambitious projects realized, this was a chance to complete a perfect miniature within an ideal space — a 250-year-old backdrop created in an era when the grammar of architectural form was just being written.

Consequently she created an environment where the bar completely dominates the space. Using a dynamic vertical gesture of fluidity. The members and guests occupy the bar at Home House instead of simply standing in front of it. They become part of the experience. This is a stunning piece of work from a architect who, as it turns out, doesn’t drink.
