Madeleines Madteater is a kind of interactive dinner performance staged every few months in the neighborhood of Islands Brygge, Copenhagen. There were lyrical strings and a dramatic areas of light and a dancer undulating on the serving dais, and it was all ritual. That is the point. It’s art you experience with all five senses, the most satisfying performance in town. Madteater is precisely as its name translates: food theater. The project, is a collaboration between the chef Mette Sia Martinussen and the film production designer Nikolaj Danielsen, along with a board of directors that includes an anthropologist, a psychotherapist, a couple of artists and a neurology professor conducting research into the senses. But this is no gimmick; it’s still very much about the food.

The chef and designer are focus on the narrative of a meal. By staging the meal, they are “mixing two passions” and coming up with a new way to tell stories. Hence you get the audience to pay attention. Once you enter this quirky world, scenes from an idyllic childhood were projected onto virtually every surface: the floor, the Indonesian dancers, the porcelain tulip bowls filled with scallops over raw cauliflower, cured ham, toasted hazelnuts and a local sorrel-like leaf. Mmm delicious my dear!!! The magic comes primarily from Martinussen’s food and of the elemental nature of communal eating. For every show, Danielsen stages a dinner party of Babette’s Feast proportions, with Martinussen matching and defining the mood. This is a restaurant that on a nightly basis generates laughter, friendship, fear, shock and joy: that’s something new. Location: Copenhagen, Denmark.
