Rainbow Falls, Hawaii

Rainbow Falls is part of the Wailuku River, which at 26 miles, is the longest river in all of Hawaii. Rainbow Falls drops 100 feet over steep walls streaked black and tan due to layers of amphibolite gneiss, granite gneiss, and mica schist. In spring this area is especially beautiful with a covering of blooms of azalea, meadow rue, and Solomon’s plume. Waianuenue Falls is its Hawaiian name which means “rainbow seen in water.” Like all waterfalls, Rainbow Falls’ display is dependent on recent rainfall.

At Rainbow Falls, the Wailuku River rushes into a large pool below. The gorge is blanketed by lush, dense tropical foliage and the turquoise colored pool is bordered by beautiful wild ginger.

Trails, including the Casque-Isles section of the Voyageur Trail, lead to panoramic views. If you look closely at the falls, you can see the cave behind the lower half of the 80 foot fall.
