Stay at Fort Clonque
Fort Clonque is perched on an exposed rocky promontory that can be reached only by a causeway that is cut off from the mainland at high tide. The fort was held by the Germans during their occupations of the Channel Islands in World War II. Despite the 19-foot (5.8-m) thick walls, you will still be lulled to sleep by the incessant crashing of waves onto the granite rocks around you. Photo by: PhotoGsy

Fort Clonque, firmly ensconced on the steep southwest coast of the island of Alderney, at the end of a long causeway just 5 miles (8 km) from mainland France, is built into and follows the natural contours of its undulating, isolated promontory rather than being constructed on top of it all. The result is a picturesque ensemble of towers, guns and ramparts spread over several levels. Photo by: nicenicey

Fort Clonque offers accommodation for up to thirteen people throughout the officers’ and solders’ quarters, the gatehouse, the upper magazine, and the German bunker. There is a modern kitchen, and food and supplies can be bought from nearby St. Anne. Care should be taken not to linger in case the tide prevents you from getting home. Alternatively, the housekeeper can do the shopping for you in advance, if you ask nicely. A fire and upright piano help soften the harshness of the environment and create an air of romance and informality. Photo by: FlickrDelusions
