Las Balsas

las balsas

Villa La Angostura in Argentina‘s Patagonia is a quaint village with a friendly atmosphere. Despite being in South America, it has slightly Swiss feel to it, which could be down to the very tempting chocolate shops on every corner, or perhaps the chalet-style homes. Set aside form the small town, Las Balsas is a hideaway in a league of its own. Hidden far down a small dirt track, within the Nahuel Huapi National Park – one of the most beautiful spots in Patagonia – this certainly is not a place you will stumble across by chance. Stay at Dos Talas

dos talas

Just two hours drive from the frenzy of Buenos Aires in vast fields strewn with flowers and dotted with cattle, along tracks leads between silvery elms into a plantation of soaring monkey puzzle trees and a clearing pristine green lawns. There sits a French-style chateau dating from 1893 that has sweeping staircases, balconies, and yellow awnings. Under the tall eucalyptus trees, a long table is laid for lunch and hosts are waiting to welcome you, grilling huge steaks on a traditional Argentine asado. Sip a glass of Malbec, bite into a spicy empanada and relax. You are home. Photo by: Bennet Summers

Deep in the remote Madidi National Park, in the Bolivian Amazon, a dream has become reality, in 1992, the community of San Jose de Uchupiamonas needed to create an economic alternative to cash crops and stop migration of their children to big cities in search of work. With the help of government grant, seventy local families began construction of Chalalan Eco-lodge, accessible only via a five-and-half-hour canoe trip along the Beni and Tuichi rivers. The lodge is hidden from the prying eyes of the twenty-first century in a lost world chichillas, monkey’s, tapirs, alligators, and more than 350 species of bird. Photo by: TimothyShoup

Casa Andina

casa andina

The private island of Isla Suasi, in the north of Lake Titicaca, is as high as the Andes, and the views are literally breathtaking. You can see the vast blue lake from everyone of the twenty-four rooms in this small rustic hotel, not to mention alpaca and vicuna grazing on the hotel’s garden out front. Stripy hammocks swing outside in the breeze as multitudes of birds catch fish in this, the deepest part of the lake. It is hard to believe there that stress exists. Photo by: sling2008
