Terme di Saturnia
Natural springwaters have been flowing into a volcanic crater in front of what is now the Terme di Saturnia Spa and Golf Resort for more than 3,000 years. The chic, minimalist hotel set at the foot of the ancient village of Saturnia in the Maremma region has one of the most famous spas in the world, renowned for its medical care as much as for its conventional beauty treatments, which take place in any one of fifty treatments rooms. The water follows a subterranean route that filters slowly through micro-fissures in the rock, absorbing salts and minerals on a journey that takes more than forty years to reach the hotel’s thermal pool, which bubbles night and day. There are 140 rooms, one indoor and outdoor pools, two restaurants, a fitness center, tennis courts, and a replica of a traditional Roman bathhouse, as well as a championship eighteen-hole golf course. The Tuscan landscape, with its ocher-brown hills and lush vineyards, hilltop villages and medieval castles, has been seducing visitors for centuries; in the Maremma, cowboys still ranch cattle the old-fashioned way and Etruscan ruins dot the landscape. The nearby medieval town of Montemerano and the magical town of Pitigliano are well worth dragging yourself away from the hotel for a day. Photo by: srcx
