Venetian Pool
The Venetian Pool is an incredible piece of living history (hence its place on the U.S. National Registry of Historic Places) and a beautiful escape in the heart of Miami. Step through the original wrought-iron gates and into another era – a time of whimsical architecture and romantic visions of how cities should be. Photo by: Derek Jackson

Formerly the place was for the coral use in the model suburb of Coral Gables. Then, marvelously-named architect Phineas Paist and artistic adviser Denman Fink used to create a pool inspired by the lagoon of Venice. With 3.1 million l of spring water and vivid imaginations they created a Mediterranean – style oasis of tranquility. Photo by: Ventri

The swimming pool is circled by Spanish buildings, a tropical garden, and a grotto carved from the coral. There is a cave, a veranda full of parlor palms and a rock diving platform. Wander among birds of paradise, cross a Venetian-style bridge to discover the artificial island and its coconut palms. Everywhere there are Latin arches and fountains amid ferns and flowers. After dark, the Venetian lanterns illuminate the scene in a romantic glow. After a million-dollar restoration program in 1989, visitors are now able to enjoy this Venetian world, as it was originally intended. Photo by: Paul Van Metre
