Viking ship museum, Oslo

Norway’s Viking heritage comes vividly to life on Bygdøy Peninsula at the Viking Ship Museum. Star exhibits include three remarkably preserved ships, Oseberg, Gokstad and Tune, found in royal burial mounds in the Oslo area.

The Viking Ship Museum displays the large Viking ships Oseberg, Gokstad and Tune, as well as founds from the chief grave at Borre in the Vestfold district. Boats of this kind were used by the Vikings on their long sea voyages and also for the burial of their chieftains.

The Museum in Oslo has the remains of three ships dating from about 800 AD We were amazed to see that the freeboard (space from the water level to top edge of ship) was only about 18 inches. One of the ships, the Oseberg, dates back to the 9th century.

In 1913, Swedish professor Gabriel Gustafson proposed a specific building to house Viking Age finds that were discovered at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century.
