The Mespelbrunn Castle

Hidden in the forest between Wuerzburg and Aschaffenburg, it has survived all wars, and dates back to the 13th century. Mespelbrunn Castle is one of the lovelies castles in northern Bavaria and is located in a small, hidden, picturesque valley. It is well preserved and remains in its original state. The castle is privately owned and may be visited only with a guided tour!

The main building of Mespelbrunn Castle is built on an almost quadratic base on the eastern side of a pond.

Note the family shields above the door leading from the courtyard to the north wing – it provided the proof that the family was indeed of noble blood.Although rifles and trophies are nailed to the wall or link to alarms. The dining hall is picturesque filled with hanging Armor and statues etc.

The noble knight Hamann Echter was given the area by the prince – bishop in 1412 and he started to build the castle as a protection against Hussites, who lived inside the woods, terrorizing local people and travellers.The castle was restored and rebuilt several times and the way it looks today it was rebuilt by Peter Echter von Mespelbrunn and his wife Gertraud von Adelsheim in 1569.
