The island is really ancient – inhabited for some 9,000 years. Its history dates back to the Mesolithic era and it was home to Druids, Romans, Celts, Vikings, Saxons and Normans. All these people left their marks there and today the island has a treasure of historical monuments, from stones and Stone Age burial sites to churches and castles.
