Centre Pompidou, Museum of Modern Art

centre pompidou

A mixture of colorful gateway into Paris’ ancient and arty Marais, the Pompidou stands out among the crowd; Renzo Piano and Richer Rogers’ winning design exposes, literally, the guts of the museum cultural center for all to see. Lovingly referred to as “Beaubourg” by many Parisians and the “gerbil cage” or “cruise liner” by foreign visitors, the Pompidou testifies to France’s surprising sense of architectural adventure, and bien sûr the lasting personal marks of its presidents.

Krapanj

krapanj

It is well worth taking a tour off the conventional tourist route to visit this ancient island just 300 km offshore from the mainland town of Brodarica, Croatia. A nobleman by the name of Juric purchased the uninhabited island in 1436 and donated it to the Franciscans who built a monastery there. When the Turks started plundering the coastline, the monk sheltered refugees from the mainland and eventually allowed them to build a settlement on the island.

Kekova

kekova island

In one of the most attractive spots on Turkeys Turquoise Coast is the lovely Mediterranean island of Kekova, As just 4.5 sq km, the island is uninhabited but lies in a bay close to the mainland. On the north shore of the island are ruins of ancient Apollonia, dating back to the 5th century BC. The reason these ruins attract so many tourists is that they lie partially beneath the waves, an amazing sunken city in the clear blue waters of the bay. Photo by: JMcD&SW
