Constructed in 1853, the wooden structure was originally used for loading timber, building materials and firewood. In September 2003 the structure was destroyed in an arson attack but the kiosk re-opened in March 2006. The pier is a popular destination for strolling, cycling, roller-skating and fishing. The Black Forest is a fairly large region located in southern Germany close to the French border. Covers forested mountains and hills rising up to the altitude of almost 1500 m, it is one of Germany’s most visited tourist destinations. “Black” because the forest growth can be so thick that the forest sometimes seems dark and black. One could easily imagine a Hansel and Gretel getting lost here.
