This is an ancient place, with fabulously dramatic landscapes and a fascinating history and culture. Unlike many of the Scottish islands, it is not dependent in any way on tourism. If you are interested of Gaelic culture, this is its heartland. Most of the inhabitants speak Gaelic as their first language and keep to their traditional way of life. One third of Scotland‘s crofts are found here. This is also the home of the world famous Harris tweed, although today most of the weaving is done in Lewis, as well as is where most of the population live. Photo by: SenninhaSenninha

The main town, Stornaway, in the east, lies on an impressive harbour, but its main point of architectural interest is the grandiose Lews Castle, built in the 1850s. The nature in the northern part of Lewis is rich in peat moors, while the south and Harris have spectacular mountain views over rivers and the sea. The Uig peninsula has some of the most breathtaking coastal scenery imaginable. Photo by: Hare Guizer
