Heligoland

heligoland

The tiny island of Heligoland, 70 km off the German coast, towers up unexpectedly, its dramatic rust-coloured cliffs rising up to 61 m high out of the grey emptiness of the North Sea. It is a geological mystery – although its bedrock is limestone, like the White Cliffs of Dover, the island itself is composed of layers of sandstone, unlike any other rock form in the region. Tory Island

tory island

Tory Island is tiny, only 5 km long and 1 km wide, but with four towns and a number of historical sites, it remains a strong community. Rugged, treeless, bleak and buffeted by wind, Tory Island is also remarkably beautiful in its way. Both mystical and remote, this granite rock rises from the sea off the north-west coast of Donegal.

Lundy

lundy island

Some 19 km out in the Bristol Channel, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Severn River, lies the island of Lundy. Protect by its high granite cliffs and remote location, the island has a colourful past. Today it belongs to the National Trust, is leased to the Landmark Trust and its solitary and beautiful nature brings visitors back here over and over again. Lundy has been inhabited since pre-historic times and has suffered endless disputes over its ownership. In 1242, Henry III built a castle there to consolidate his control – instead Lundy became anarchic and chaos reigned until William Hudson Heaven bought the island in 1834.

Fire Island

This elongated, thin barrier island in Suffolk Country, New York, protects much of the southern shoreline of Long Island from the worst excesses of the Atlantic Ocean. Fire Island was 49.5 km long and 0.8km across at the widest point. But the shape is constantly changing – at one point it stretched for 95km from adjacent Jones Island in the east to Southampton at the New York end and was as wide as 8km.

Setenil – the city under the rock

setenil-de-las-bodegas

Setenil is probably unique among the white villages of Andalucia, Spain. With its tiny houses in typical Andalucian design, this astonishing village is covered by a large cliff. The houses seem to emerge from the rocks, and some have even olive groves on their roofs. The town has a ruined fortress that stands on top of a hill, alongside the church. Other attractions of the town are the cave houses, the Arab tower and cistern.
