Kiritimati Island

kiritimati-island

Feel like a trip to London and Paris? You will find both on Kiritimati in mid-Pacific, also known as Christmas Island (Captain Cook arrived on 24 December 1777, in ‘naming’ mood). The world’s largest coral atoll extends to a substantial 640 sq km and makes up 70 per cent of the land area in the scattered island republic of Kiribati. Its villages are London, Tabwakea, Banana, Poland and Paris (now sadly in ruins). And no you don’t have to take a Geiger counter – the radiation from Britain’s 1950s H-bomb tests on Maiden Island, 32o km south of Kiritimati, has long dissipated on the four winds.

Ko Samet

ko samet

Ko Samet in the Gulf of Thailand, some 200 km south east of Bangkok is a favorite holiday island for both Thais and foreigners alike. A mere 30-minute boat trip from the mainland, Ko Samet is quite easily reached from Bangkok, and its famous white powder sand beaches have made it popular with everyone – families, backpackers, package holiday, tourists, even working girls from Pattaya in need of a rest. Declared a National Park in 1981, the island should have been protected from development, but in reality all the accessible beaches around this 6 km long island have resorts, beach bungalow, operations, restaurants and bars lining the sand. Outside the park, the only village, Na Dan, where the boats arrive, is where most of the population live. Photo by: travellers_in_speedos

Lefkada

lefkada

Lefkada is paradise and was attached to the mainland until a canal was cut in the 7th century BC. Now it is reached by road over a pontoon swivel bridge. The heavy Venetian fortification of the north coast, some of which remains, was not enough to prevent the Ottomans taking it in 1479; their tenure lasted about two centuries. The island is mountainous and very fertile, lush with olive grooves and vineyards and traditional villages. The west coast is rugged, the east sheltered, with calm beaches. Some of the low-lying area are marshy. Photo by: *Malela*

Sark

sark island

Sark is the smallest of the four main Channel Islands. It lies in the English Channel, about 128km from England and about 32 km from the coast of Normandy. There are no cars on the island, and transport other than on foot consists of horse-drawn carriages, tractors and bicycles. The island is formed of steep, rocky cliffs, averaging about 90 m above sea level, rising to a center plateau. At its highest point a windmill can be found, dated 1571. In order to reach this plateau, passengers disembarking in the miniscule harbour must travel upwards through a rock-hewn tunnel made in 1866. Photo by: Guernsey Kestrel
