Where the Atlantic and the Caribbean go head to head, lies the incarnation of the tropical island idyll. Its curves of white sand fringed by swaying palm trees, green against the azure sea, combine in a single image celebrated by millions of Europeans as the setting for the Bounty (chocolate) Bar TV commercial. Saona is the notion of paradise made manifest – and it looks even better than on film. Photo by: DiFo&Natura

At 45 km long and 25 km wide, Dominica is the most mountainous of the volcanic Antilles. The 1,447 m Morne DiablotinMorne Trois Pitons and at 1,400 m are the highest peaks whose proximity attracts much more rain than most islands. The result is Dominica’s famously fabulous tropical rainforest, full of rushing torrents, cascades and stepped waterfalls. It’s a dark-green world slashed by ribbons of bright sunshine striking into the pretty valleys, catching the colours of trails of orchids, bougainvillea and hibiscus, and populated by vivid blue, red, yellow signature splashes of the island’s astonishing birds.

A sacred island in a lake, Mokoia is a green lava dome rising 180 m above the still waters of Lake Roturua in the heart of North Island. Stepping ashore, its deeply spiritual nature seems to reverberate through the air. This natural sanctuary for wildlife belongs to the Te Arawa people and was once known as Te Motu Tapu a Tinirau – the Sacred Island of Tinirau. Isolated for hundred of years, it holds unique kumera (sweet potato) plantation, which meant it was once hotly contested by warring tribes. Photo by: sam&onny

A tiny jewel set in the azure seas of the South Pacific, Norfolk Island is just 8 km long and 1,600 km northeast of Sydney. It is the biggest of a cluster of three islands on the Norfolk Ridge, fingered by coral reefs and crowned by pristine rainforest and some of the world’s tallest tree ferns. On October 1774 James Cook first landed on this diminutive island and named in honour of the then Duchess of Norfolk. Convict starred to arrive 14 years later and over time it gained quite a reputation, becoming known as ‘hell in the Pacific‘. Then in 1856, descendants of the Bounty mutineers with their Tahitian wives and children sailed for five weeks form Pitcairn Island to settle on Norfolk Island. Photo by: thinboyfatter

You need lots of fingers to count the island in the rocky Alexander Archipelago, which stretches for 485 km, hugging the southeastern coast of Alaska – there are about 1,100 of them. Deep fjords and channels separate mainland and islands, which have inhospitable, irregular coasts. The whole area is densely forested with fir woods and temperate rain forest. Most part of the archipelago is protected from development and teems with wildlife. The main economic activities are tourism, fishing and logging. The largest islands are Admiralty, Baranof, Chichagof, Dall, Revillagigedo, Prince of Wales and Wrangell. Photo by: brookb_phx
