The island of Ciovo is an extension of the magnificent medieval UNESCO World Heritage coastal town of Trogir to which it is connected by a drawbridge. In the past Ciovo was known as the barn of ‘Trogir’ because so much of the town’s food was grown to the island’s fertile soil. Today, it has become a popular summer retreat for residents of the nearby city of Split. Photo by: premus

Less than 6 km south of the party island of Ibiza, Formentera is its complete antithesis – an island with very little coastal development, and not a club in sight. Its relative inaccessibility and lack of water has protected from the ravages of tourism and it is one of the least spoilt spots in the Mediterranean with only one proper tourist resort, Es Pujols. Ometepe is an eco-tourism island with a lack of hotels, but many islanders are opening their homes to low paying guests. Ometepe‘s unique double-breasted shape was foretold in a vision to Nahuas and Chorotegas who came from Mexico and made it their sanctuary. Photo by: NicaRagans

In Mayan times, Ambergis Caye was a trading post supporting 10,000 people. At 40 km long and up to 1,5 km wide, it’s the largest of 200 cayes studding the coastline of Belize and lies off the southernmost tip of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. In fact the Mayans created the island by digging a channel to provide a trade route and border between Belize and Mexico. Then and now there’s only one major settlement San Pedro, built over Mayan ruins and home to the most of the population. Photo by: CastAShadow

Kurl Islands is a chain of 56 volcanic islands stretches for 1,300 km like stepping-stones all the way from the Kamatchka Peninsula to Hokkaido, Japan. They form the boundary between the Sea of Okhotsk and the Pacific Ocean and the summits of undersea stratvolcanoes, part of the Pacific Ring of Fire. Offshore is the Kuril trench, one of the deepest ocean regions in the world, 10,5 km deep.

A wonderfully compelling world of icebergs, glaciers and the midnight sun, Franz Josef Land is one of the few remaining truly wild places on the planet. It is an archipelago of 191 volcanic islands, intended with dramatic bays and fjords, covering an area of 16,130 sq km in the Barents Sea, almost entirely within the Arctic Circle. There is located the most northerly point of Europe, only 911 km from the North Pole, at Cape Fligely on Rudolph Island. Photo by: photofthewilds

The most southern of the Ionian chain, Zakynthos, also called Zante, shares the history of invasion, freedom from Ottoman rule and devastation by earthquakes. Much of the island is still green, untouched. The north and west is mountainous, the centre very fertile, with farms, vineyards and lovely old villages set in beautiful countryside where life is more or less untouched by tourism. Photo by: Tr8la

Ko Tao is situated a couple of hours boat ride from the mainland, in the Gulf of Thailand. Twenty years ago only the most intrepid of backpackers made it to the island, due to its relative remoteness. Today all that has changed, and Ko Tao has become a major dive center. Photo by: grolli77

The Con Dao Archipelago lies 180 km south of Vung Tau, exposed in the South China Sea. Its isolation makes it unsurprising that Con Son, its main island, was a penal colony until 1975. Today the small town that has developed round the remains of the penal colony is friendly and attractive. The group has evergreen trees and cool sea breezes. Dolphins jumping and playing round the boat when you visit Con Dao’s smaller islands. Photo by: Cmicblog
