Plague Monument in Vienna

Plague Monument in Vienna, Austria, Central Europa. Elegantly displayed in the center of Graben Square in Vienna, Austria is the Pestsaule statue, a memorial to those Vienna citizens that were lost to the plague. Designed in the structure are beautiful angels on clouds and a trinity sculpture at the top.

The disease is believed to have been bubonic plague ,carried by fleas associated with the black rat and other rodents.The Pestsaule is one statue to remember the horrible plague and it stands at approximately sixty-nine feet high.

The monument was erected in 1693 at the behest of the Emperor Leopold I to mark the emergence of the city from the disastrous plague of 1679. Arranged around the statue of Mary, Mother of God are six saints, all intercessors against the plague.
