Mostar, Bosnia & Herzegovina

mostar

Mostar is the second largest city in Bosnia & Herzegovina. “Most” means “bridge” in many Slavonic languages. And of course the biggest attraction is the oldest single arch stone bridge, built in 1556. It spans 28.7 m of the Neretva River and 21 m above the summer water level. The historic part of Mostar and the Old Bridge’ Area were proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In Mostar you feel the eastern atmosphere. But there is more to Mostar than just the bridge – towering minarets, surrounding hills and mountains, small cobbled streets with ancient architecture. Have lunch in any of the many restaurants with terraces facing the Neretva River.  Mostar also is famous with its cultural events: The Bridge Jumper Festival and the Summer Festival with traditional dances, music etc.
