Roosevelt Island a narrow island located in the East River in New York City . Opened in 1839, it was a much-needed relief to the overcrowded wards of Bellevue Hospital. For more than 20 years, the site remained closed to the public. In 2006, restoration of the landmark was completed and the building now serves as the centerpiece of a residential community.
