San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

At 225,000 square feet, the Sfmoma is one of the largest North American buildings devoted to modern art. The museum opened in 1935 under founding director Dr. Grace Morley as the San Francisco Museum of Art, solely to 20th-century contemporary art.

The steel frame is covered with textured and patterned brickwork, one of Botta’s tradmarks. The five-story tower in the rear is made up of galleries and offices. The Museum Store offers the West Coast’s finest selection of modern and contemporary art books, as well as innovative design objects and furniture.

Paintings, photos, portraits, and sculptures by contemporary and modern artists can be seen. Also available is a listening tour.

The garden adds 14,400 square feet of gallery space creating greater opportunity for large-scale sculptures.

The Sfmoma Museum Store’s collection of artists’ jewelry features original pieces from around the world — wearable works of art crafted from the finest materials.
