The Ishtar Gate

IshtarGateBabylon
Built about 575 BC by Nebuchadnezzar II, the Ishtar Gate was one of the eight gates of the inner city of Babylon, capital of the Babylonian Empire (now in Iraq). It is one of the most impressive monuments rediscovered in the ancient Near East. The Ishtar Gate high more than 38 feet (12 meters) was made of brick glazed with a copper turquoise glaze alternating with unglazed brick (about 120 of them) covered with gold leaf. Covered with dragons, lions and bulls, Nebuchadnezzar dedicated the huge, ceremonial gate to the goddess Ishtar.

Babylon, the legendary city, is the most famous ancient city in the whole World. It was the capital of ten Mesopotamian dynasties starting with the dynasty of King Hammurabi (1792-1750 BC). Babylon was renowned for its high, well-fortified walls and for the magnificence of its temples and palaces. Its famous Hanging Gardens, built by King Nebuchadnezzar II for his wife Amytas, were one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Parts of the gate and lions are in various museums around the world. The foundations of the gate, going down some 45 feet, were discovered between 1899 and 1914, including numerous glazed bricks and unglazed figures. The gateway has been reconstructed in the Pergamon Museum, Berlin, from the glazed bricks found, so its original height is different in size. Reconstructed height is 47 feet.

The bible has proven to be an unreliable historical document, King Nebuchadnezzar can be judged by his works some of which are priceless throughout the world, Amin.

How has it been proven? What evidence have you got?

what do you mean by “the bible has proven to be an unreliable historical document”?
you mean it was made up, or inconsistent with archaeological discoveries, or misinterpreted? explain yourself.

Read the Bible and then research historical events and you will discover that history and the Bible are identical in facts, which is just one example of its authenticity and being the true word of God.

I may not agree with what Abaabad said, but YOU should learn to spell and use correct grammar before calling someone “stupid and idiot,” IDIOT.

Reading the different comments on this page, I’m amazed at how so many people are misguided  into thinking the Bible is not historically correct. Even the History channel,Discovery and,if I am not mistaken,Nat Geo has admitted to the historical accuracy of the Bible. I won’t go as far as saying that any of those channels would call the religious side of the Bible “historic”, but the archeological aspects in the Bible have been found true by a great many archeologists from both religious schools and purely “scientific” schools of thought. Sodom and Gomoraha  have been found and appear to have been completely destroyed in a manner similar to what was described in the Bible and in the area also described in the Bible. If you keep an open mind, you find it is much easier to learn true history rather than sticking your foot in your mouth and showing your ignorance parroting negative, biased opinions!

Well I’m going to say I have a different view of the Bible.  NOT as an historic document, or as a spiritual rule book.  There are several references that are historically inaccurate (please keep in mind the Bible was inspired by God but written by men).  Also, we need to keep in mind that the books of the Bible were NOT written with the intend of being the Bible…they were letters, scrolls, documents written with a specific group in mind…so the context can be diluted and confused in todays understanding.  (Example: how I would address and talk with the President of the U.S. is vastly different than how I would address my friends. AND consider the difference in the the slang and colloquialisms that have taken place in the past 100 years just here in the U.S. alone) Several cultures did not view events in a linear timeline, but level of reverance or importance…those things were mentioned first.  If you wanted to perform a historical analyisis of inaccuracies you only need to compare the the first four books of the New Testiment.  Inaccurate if you are considering a linear timeline.  Also, there are inconsistancies because these things were written down long after the sacred birth, from 4 different perspectives.  Suprise…Jesus did not have a scribe following him around.

I consider the Bible as more of an account of our spritual evolution…how we came to where we are today, and so very excited about where we are headed tomorrow.  To me, in this context…the Bible means so much more and I hold the stories with much more consideration and respect when I come to realize just what they meant to the people having those spritual experiences.  It makes me want to understand their perspective.  It makes me want to know why polygamy, slavery, physical abuses were not only blessed by God, but rules were put in place on how to excute them for the blessing.

So, I guess what I’m trying to get across here, is that historical accuracy is a very tiny part of the contextual framework of the books of the Bible.  Without context there is no meaning to the stories or the words. There is only 2 dimentional understanding and the Bible is anything but 2 dimentional.  To really understand the message, to really grasp the meaning you need to understand who wrote those words, who they were intended for, and try to understand the place both sides were in in time, place, and frame of mind.  To assume these words were intended for me would be arrogant…but to know that I’ve been given permission to look into my spiritual ancestors treasure box of keepsake letters and documents is overwhelming.  This gift deserves my utmost respect, and it is my responsibility to read it and understand it without assumptions or speculations.  It is my responsibility to see the true message those words so artfully convey…this is impossible without context.
