Sydney Beaches and Cuisine

Mid-January is the peak of the Australian summer and all the beaches in Sydney are crowded with sun-worshipers, body surfers, teenagers and young families. As the midday sun beats down, beachgoers take a dip in the cool waters.

As well as Sydney is famous for its rock pools, so-named because they have been hammered out of rocks at the ocean’s edge.On Bronte Beach, the pool meets the surf.

The next rock pool is Fairy Bower, named for the fairy penguin rookery there, is too small for laps or exercise. But the surroundings make it worth a visit.

When you swam all day long, you get hungry very fast, so visit one of the city’s best restaurants from historic Bondi to upscale Balmoral, ranging from former changing rooms converted into elegant dining spaces to informal street cafes where you can rub shoulders with Nicole Kidman or Hugh Jackman before going for a swim in the roiling surf. On Bronte Beach, Swell restaurant serves up Asian-inspired fare.

The main menu includes an assiette de canard — duck breast with hoisin sauce, rillettes cannelloni and a foie gras custard. It also serves seafood options like Tasmanian Arctic char.

One of the Sydney’s best hangouts is Bondi  Beach. The sunny dining room, perched above an ocean-filled pool, offers sweeping views of the vast beach below.
