Bryant Park skating best

The “New York Times” recently wrote a piece on the famed skating rinks of New York City, USA, naming Bryant Park the best and going so far as to call the rink “a yearly miracle that materializes on the lawn behind the New York Public Library”. H2.0 is a block from Bryant Park, so most of us have the pleasure of hitting the rink at least once (it’s free if you have skates!). Sadly the rink will be closing on the 15th, so check the hours at Bryant park and skate your heart out!
The Bryant Park lawn, well known for its pristine grass and the near-perfect bodies that lounge upon it in summer, will soon also be known for the blades gliding across it in winter. A continuous success since its inauguration in 1950, Wollman Skating Rink provides more than 30,000 square feet of skating surface in a scenic outdoor setting. In the evening, Fifth Avenue adds a dramatic backdrop. Rangers fans, this winter the NY Rangers are honored to partner with The Pond at Bryant Park once again.

The Bryant Park rink, which will take two weeks to put in place and cost $4 million, will measure 17,000 square feet - about half the size of Wollman and about twice the size of the Rockefeller Center rink. The temporary rink will be put directly onto Bryant Park’s sod, necessitating that the lawn’s crown - built to keep rain and snow melt from pooling - be flattened first. The rink’s three-inch surface of ice will be laid atop layers of plastic and foam.
The 1999-2000 New York Rangers, on behalf of NYR SKATE, will host the sixth annual “Skate with the Greats,” on Tuesday, January 11, 2000. “Skate with the Greats” is a charity event to benefit The Ronald McDonald House of New York.
