A actual and most visited region is Central Square

The area around Central Square, including Area IV and Cambridge port, has a wealth of commissioned brightly-colored murals embracing the ethnic diversity of the neighborhoods. The murals also shield the adorned building sides from taggers. Casual and comfortable, Cambridge Common’s the place to come for a drink and a simple bite to eat (like a cheese-laden bacon burger!). The place boasts a friendly, unpretentious atmosphere that appeals to students and professionals alike, and everyone is welcome. For entertainment, head downstairs to catch live acts performing at the Lizard Lounge.

Take a deep dive into The Harvard Coop Bookstore (the large and “official” university bookstore, much better after management was taken over by Barnes and Noble a few years ago) or the Harvard Bookstore (independent bookstore with great selection, competent staff and a used book basement).

Rendezvous Central Square is a new restaurant in the same area that’s very worth checking out, whereas Central Kitchen has more of a bar-like atmosphere. The Middle East is another popular site famous for the live music it hosts most nights. The mission of the Central Square Business Association is to maintain and support a lively commercial and business area and to enhance the quality of life in Central Square. The CSBA advocates for and represents the interests of businesses, and contributes to a welcoming, interesting and energetic sense of place for working people, visitors, students and residents of all ages.
Central Square is also the original home of actor Ben Affleck and the Necco Wafer factory. It is served by the MBTA Red Line subway branch by the station named Central. The intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and Brookline in Central Square is named in honor of rock musician Mark Sandman.
