The statue is only 2 feet tall — can be found behind a small fence at the corner of rue de l’Etuve and rue Chenet. Sometimes known as ‘Little Julian’, the statue is in its own way, a typically Belgian symbol of cultural self-mockery.
The Manneken Pis is a symbol of Brussels but nobody knows whom he represents actually. The legend says, that he put out a fire from bombardment of the city by Frenchmen. It is known, that he was created in the seventeenth century in fashionable style of game fountains. They speak, that from time to time water is replaced with beer. Each tourist should visit the boy and be photographed confirming to the stay in Brussels. There are several legends behind this statue, but the most famous is the one about Duke Godfried II of Braban. In 1142, the troops of this two-year-old lord were battling against the troops of the Berthouts title the lords of Grimbergen, in Ransbeke currently Never – over Heembeek. The troops put the infant lord in a basket and hung it in a tree, to encourage them. From there, he urinated on the troops of the Berthouts, who eventually lost the battle. This is a very small fountain, which you probably won’t see anyway because of the crowds of tourists and pickpockets.
