Elsa’s Kopje is a luxurious oasis in the wilds of Meru National Park. The word “Kopje” means “small hill”, the lodge blends into the hillside of Mughwango Hill is George Adamson’s original camp. Meru is vast with arid, open plains dotted with Doum Palms and Baobab trees and lush vegetation along 13 rivers, like green ribbons, bisecting the Park. Here you’ll see a more diverse range of species than in any other Park or Reserve. Meru is famous for its bird life, including riverine and forest species as well as the arid dry country species. There is a sense of space, style and pure relaxation. Each of the 9 individually built cottages are luxuriously appointed, and here you’ll find the ultimate “room with a view”.
The rooms have been designed to showcase the incredible wildlife crossing the plains of Meru, and the impressive views of Mt. Kenya. Every cottage is coolly elegant with generous double or twin beds, romantically swathed in netting and unique en-suite bathrooms. The baths and showers of this game lodge in Kenya are built as features of the rocky hillside. Elsa’s Private House is set slightly apart from the main lodge. There is a living and dining area, which falls neatly into its own private swimming pool. The main lodge also has its own pool with a view of the Meru plains. Paved paths, lit by lamps at night, lead from each cottage to the comfortable open bar, lounge and dining room.
Enjoy game drives in open 4WD vehicles, guided nature walks, fishing, night game drives and rafting on the Tana River. Try a bush breakfast, picnic or sundown, or a bush dinner under the stars. Head out to explore the nearby Kora National Park for the day; relax in the lodge, take a dip in the pool or browse in the library. From your cottage, tucked into the rocks and forms of the hill, enjoy a 270 degree view of this beautiful, wild park. The landscape and vegetation is fascinating, tracing the lines of ancient landforms created by the series of lava flows off the Nyambeni Hills towards the Tana River many millions of years ago. The different soil ages have created distinct patterns of vegetation from lush thick bush to sparse arid sections, a unique and eye catching ecosystem now crisscrossed by 13 tree lined rivers.
