Guell park contains amazing stone structures, stunning tiling and fascinating buildings-everything in the park is wonderful. It was designed by the catalan architect
Antonio Gaudi. It contains the home of the architect Gaudi which is now a small museum.It was declared a universal monument by
UNESCO in 1984. Gaudi avoided leveling the grounds so that the park has a network of twisting roads which follow the contours of the land. He divided the land into 60 plots between 1000 and 2000 square meters in size.
Park Guell was originally commissioned as a private housing estate of sixty dwelling for Gaudi’s patron, Don Eusebio Guell. In the end, however, only two houses were ever built and the area was subsequently opened as a
public park in 1922.
The dragon fountain is at the entrance to Guell park. This dragon is adorned in beautiful coloured tiling and there is something rather hypnotic and magical about it. At the top of Guell park is a
terraced area where you get a wonderful view of the park and of
Barcelona City. The park provides astonishing views of the city, Barcelona Bay and the Mediterranean Sea. Barcelona’s cathedral and the city’s Columbus column are also visible from the park’s vantage points. Here you will find multi-coloured tiled
mosaic seats as shown in this picture. The park is full of trees and shrubs and as you walk around you’ll see unusual and colourful sculptures, mosaics, walkways and tiling. The benches, buildings, fountains and trails of Park Guell are full of colorful mosaics and undulating forms in an almost psychedelic homage to natural forms. The ceramic trencadis follow the sinuous geometric surfaces, a device which gives all of the park’s ornamentation a unique beauty. That includes gingerbread gatehouses topped with red and white wild mushrooms, pavilions of contorted stone, a vast hall of columns, and the coup de grace, a giant decorative lizard. You can also expect to see some fabulous views of Barcelona from Guell Park as the whole grounds are build on hill land.
Park Guell Barcelona is the perfect setting to enjoy a cold drink, play a game of
frisbee, or simply take in the fabulous views of the city and harbor. It is also a place which offers opportunities to engage in different activities, including strolling, people-watching, eating at the cafe and meeting friends.
A great place to relax, enjoy the countryside and gain great views out over Barcelona.
The extraordinary craftsmanship and unusual use of materials and plants throughout the park catch and delight the eye, making
Parc Guell one of the great parks of the world.
