Etura Open-air ethnographic Museum
Etura is the first museum of this sort in Bulgaria. The buildings of this unique museum started in 1963 and is opened in 1964, but his building extending to 1976. Museum is located in northern slopes of Balkan mountains, 5km from the center of Gabrovo. It is occupied an area of 60decares. The idea appurtenance by Lazar Donkov. The museum covers area of 7 hectares from witch is located 50 objects-technical equipments for water : traditional Bulgarian interior of the houses which craft workshop; objects whit public significance. The exhibition shows live demonstrations of the folklore to Bulgaria, as the age-old grafts, traditional cuisine and the costumes of the citizens of Gabrovo.
The buildings of museum contributes to nomination of Gabrovo as important economic, intellectual, enlightened and a trade center. In 1835 here is opened the first new Bulgarian school. This is the time when in town develops over 26 handicrafts which founded market in Viena, Bukurest and other European cities. During the BG Rival every town had tower clock high minded. The tower of Etura measured off the time and defined life to the village. According to its strokes opened and closed crafts workshop, its dictated the rhythm in craftsman’s center.
The buildings of museum was realized by three basic methods : restoration of objects, carrying to the original equips and recreations to edifices. In front of basic entrance to museum is located beautiful mosaic which is maked from famous Bulgarian painters Angel Angelov and Ivan Donkov, symbol of traditional Bulgarian hospitality. To the second entrance you are a hearty welcome from old hospitable man. After pass him you are upright at one small wooden bridge over the river, which is the “entrance”of Etura.
The Etura gives notion about typical bulgarians handicraft settlements before 150 years. Little cobblestone pavement streets, a tower clock and old-time houses reproductions spirit of Bulgarian Revival. In crafts workshop are present over 25 handicrafts as : wood-carving, cutlery, pottery making, furrier woollen braiding, weaving and more. The visitors can watching the process of elaboration to the objects : knitwear, silverwear, traditional dishes, national costumes, tools, instruments. The foreign guests at ethnographic complex can visits a herb-shop where they introduces with traditional technology for drawing out attar of roses from famous Bulgarian rose.
For Bulgarian holidays as Pasch, St.George’s day ,Christmas become alive old manners, dancing horo in the ring, sounding kavals, bagpipes and other Bulgarian instruments.
